John was born in Moss Side and raised in Reddish. He has lived in Moss Side, Merseyside and Beswick. He has worked in a nightclub, hospital, housing department and on the buses. He was twenty-seven at the time of his involvement with the Commonword and was instrumental in setting up its Northern Gay Writers group. His novella Marshall’s Big Score was published by Commonword in 1979.
