Hazel Sauntry was born in Cheetham Hill, Manchester in 1946.  After leaving school, she worked as a sewing machinist. She lived in Partington, Greater Manchester where she ran a playgroup in its community centre and worked on the community development team there. With her partner Ron Jesson she fostered teenagers and took part in the Lifetimes project, in which she got to document some of her life story.
