John Best was born in Durham, Barbados in 1929. He came to England in the Fifties, first living in Moss Side before moving to Partington, Greater Manchester. He worked as a welder, trained as a judo instructor, then went into youth work.  He took part in the Lifetimes project, in which he got to document some of his life story.
