On the Wild Side by Joan Batchelor

“Much in here is written for people who think they dislike poetry, who feel it may be too ‘high-brow’ for the working class…it’s not you know…it is for the working class.”

At the time of publication, the writer was forty-one years old. Wales features prominently in this collection which tells of a rural childhood, rugby, families and neighbours but also of the darker side of working class Welsh life the Merthyr Rising of 1831, the Aberfan disaster and the decline of coal mining in the region.
