Liz Almond’s poetry explores ambiguity; the coexistence of opposites. It travels through time and place and other people’s experience. The poems in this collection are often about other women’s lives.
The Voice Of The Hive by Liz Almond
Her right hand clasps a key poised
over the dome of a clay-daubed skep.
Sunlight flashed on metal
as the telling begins.
A low murmur vibrates through the straw,
wings tremble as news unfolds
of morning milk refusing to churn
and of swallows building under eaves.
It is Sunday,
they sense her silk rustle importantly.
She limps and stoops
to pick bunches of borage and balm,
the entrance will be fragrant at twilight.
Daily the ritual repeats itself,
urgently the talk is of concealment.
The voice of the hive rises and falls,
they speak of endless forays
before the cells can be sealed.
