Writing about himself in Common Verse in the late Seventies, Steve said:
“I was born in Middle where I learnt to read and write and until I was sixteen bored the teachers half to death. I was brought up at my parents’ house until I was twelve when my mother and father were separated. The court decided — I don’t agree with them — that my mother was unsuitable to look after myself and my younger brother. We were placed in Bankfield Children’s Home until I was sixteen whe it was decided that I was man enough to look after myself. But it took me about three years to learn to look after myself, and it was to my amazement that I became politically aware, and even greater amazement that I found that I could write and so could everyone else because I know that I have no better nor worse brain than anyone else.”
